FOR 285 Recreational Trail Planning and Design
CRN# 14243
(This course has been completed)

Course Description:
Trails are an essential component of our culture and a pivotal representation of multi-use land conservation. They allow us to commute, recreate, and explore.

With significant focus paid to experiential layout and sustainable design, trails guide visitors along a path of minimal impact through sensitive ecosystems while providing rewarding moments of discovery. Trail planners keep this goal in mind as they design each aspect of a recreational trail.

Recreational Trail Planning and Design offers students the opportunity to explore the meaning and influence of trails on the public, learn the science behind sustainable trail design, and gain practical experience by planning and designing an accessible trail for the UVM Research Forest located in Jericho, VT.

Students will learn trail planning and design skills by way of group discussions, lectures, guest speakers, site visits to local trail systems, readings, and experiential field work.
